MOBULA SEASON | BAJA EXPEDITION

Baja California Sur | June 4 to June 10, 2027

Each spring, the nutrient-rich upwellings of the Sea of Cortez trigger one of the most extraordinary wildlife events on the planet. Mobula munkiana — Munk's devil ray — aggregates in their tens of thousands in the waters of the Cerralvo Channel, just off the coast of El Sargento and La Ventana. They come to feed on the seasonal blooms of zooplankton that these currents bring to the surface, and to mate. The result is one of the largest known aggregations of any ray species anywhere in the world.

Mid June sits at the heart of this window. The rays are here. The water is warm and clear. This seven day expedition puts you right in the middle of it.

This is not a resort holiday. This is a week in the water, in one of the most biodiverse seas on earth, with a small group of people who are there for exactly the same reason you are. Snorkeling, free diving, hiking, biking, beach lunches, and the kind of wildlife encounters that stay with you for the rest of your life.

This is my home. And I cannot wait to share it with you.

WHO IS THIS FOR

This expedition is for anyone who loves the ocean. You do not need to be a certified diver. You do not need to be an athlete. You need curiosity, a sense of adventure, and a willingness to get in the water.

Snorkelers, free divers, ocean lovers, first timers, and experienced water people are all equally welcome here. What unites everyone is a genuine desire to connect with the sea and with the people around them.

This is a queer led space. That means you can show up exactly as you are. No explanations needed. No performance required. Just you, the ocean, and a group of people you will actually want to spend a week with.

EXPEDITION ITINERARY

DAY 1 | ARRIVAL

June 4th

Check in at the Ananda cabins at Casa Tara Retreat: a beautiful beachfront compound in El Sargento with two infinity pools, two jacuzzis, a spa, and a restaurant serving local cuisine using locally sourced ingredients. All meals are included throughout the expedition so there is nothing to worry about.

This evening we gather for a welcome dinner together.

DAY 2 | RASTA BEACH & CARDON FOREST

June 5th

Playa Rasta / Rasta Beach, El Sargento, Baja California Sur.

Rasta Beach is three blocks from your accommodation (and my house). It is where I go snorkeling all the time and I am still in awe that I get to live here. Schools of fish hang around the Pocillopora and Porites coral heads in water so alive it never gets old. We start the morning here, then head into the Cardón forest for a mountain bike adventure through the south trails at golden hour.

DAY 3 | SEA SAFARI

June 6th

Lunch during Sea safari at Punta Arena Beach, Baja California Sur. Almuerzo durante Sea safari en playa Punta Arena, Baja California Sur.

Full day on the water. We head out on the Cerralvo Channel in search of Mobula munkiana aggregations and whatever else the Sea of Cortez decides to reveal. Every day out here is different and that is exactly what makes it so extraordinary.

Punta Gorda hike, El Sargento, Baja California Sur.

DAY 4 | EL SALTITO & PUNTA GORDA

June 7th

El Saltito is my favourite snorkel spot in the area. A beautiful beach, shallow coral heads close to shore, and an 800 metre swim out to a dramatic rock formation where sea lions sometimes hang out. Hard corals, soft corals, and fish everywhere. We have lunch right there on the sand. Late afternoon we head out for a sunset hike to Punta Gorda, an easy 5km round trip through desert landscape with stunning views over Cerralvo Island and the Bay of La Ventana.

DAY 5 | SEA SAFARI II

June 8th

Punta Arena beach during Sea safari, Baja California Sur.

Back on the water for a second full day exploring the Cerralvo Channel. By now you know the rhythm of the sea out here and your confidence in the water has grown. The Sea of Cortez never shows you the same thing twice.

DAY 6 | BALANDRA

June 9th

Balandra beach / Playa Balandra, La Paz, Baja California Sur.
Balandra beach / Playa Balandra, La Paz, Baja California Sur.
Balandra beach / Playa Balandra, La Paz, Baja California Sur.

Balandra is one of the most magical bays in the world. A protected bay of impossibly clear water, white sand, and dramatic desert mountains rising straight out of the sea. We spend the day here. Swimming, hiking around the bay, cold drinks, and good company. No agenda. Just the beach and the people you have spent the week with.

In the evening, sunset drinks and our farewell dinner together. The perfect way to close a week that will be very hard to leave.

DAY 7 | DEPARTURE

June 10th

El malecon, La Paz, Baja California Sur.

Check out before 11AM and safe travels wherever you are headed next.

I hope you leave with a full heart, a love for this ocean and this place, and connections that last well beyond this week. Until the next adventure.
